The Real Score of Alternative Healing

Tuesday, May 11th, 2010

Some people tend to shun away from modern medicine and opt to traditional medicines more commonly known today as alternative healing. But what really is about them that creates a cult-like of followers from all over the world. Here’s what we got according to some research:

Acupuncture

Based on the Chinese culture, it’s one of the oldest methods of healing with a belief that our body possesses patterns of energy, or sometimes called Qi, that flows all over. When this energy flow is obstructed or disrupted, diseases occur. So the use of needles inserted to specific points is believed to restore the flow.

Studies conducted from different countries reported positive results among patients who underwent post-surgery or post-chemotherapy acupuncture programs compared to patients who chose residential programs. Some of them also reported less occurrence of pain that allowed them to stop taking painkillers. Modern doctors dismiss the idea of Qi because according to them the needles inserted allow the body to release endorphins, which are natural painkillers, and hormones that stimulate the immune system. All the same, acupuncture remains to be in the mainstream.

Massage

The use of touch and applied pressure to the body is what describes the art of this treatment. It targets the skin, muscles, tendons, and ligaments to ease discomforts and pain by relieving tension and promoting active blood flow. Due to this effect, the nervous system is calmed and muscles get loosened up. A massage varies depending on techniques. Today, Swedish, Shiatsu, Thai, Deep Tissue, and Rolfing are some of the best techniques advocates choose.

According to experts, massage really generates positive health effects because there’s a relationship between stress and our immune system. Studies claimed that cortisol, a stress hormone, may be greatly reduced with massage.

Yoga

According to yoga experts, the art of yoga is more than just about bending, stretching, and meditation. It focuses on the balance and harmony in the mind, body, and soul of a person to achieve holistic wellness. When a person’s focused and thinking positively through practicing meditation, he frees himself from stress thereby allowing hims to always feel joy and contentment. Also, the position a practitioner does also promote hormone release, which helps better functions of the organs.

A different scientific study proved that being on a state of contentment, optimism, and bliss allows the body to release natural killer cells and other components of the immune system that aid in combating a lot of diseases including cancers.

Reiki

This healing process comes from Japanese technique for stress reduction and relaxation. It’s more commonly characterized by “laying on hands” and its idea is rooted from an unseen “life force energy” that flows through a person. This energy flow what causes a person alive and if it’s low, it means a possibility of getting sick or stressed. With each treatment, a person feels a glowing radiance that flows through and around. It aims to treat the body, emotions, mind, and spirit to create physical and psychological effects like relaxation, peace, security, and well being.

Speaking of scientific and biological effects, Reiki’s effect to human health may be as well similar to yoga. Many claims of its benefits but perhaps these health benefits are accounted to the positive emotions a person feels thereby increasing stamina and boosting the immune system.

Freeing Your Young Mind and Body

Being a teenager is the most exciting stage of our lives because it’s here where we start facing the hardships of reality, where we encounter the pain and joy in love, and where we begin building the foundation of our social life. We tend to be busy in our school activities, join non-school organizations, and develop interest in different hobbies.

But this is also the phase where most adolescents forget about being healthy and fit, which is way different from how we perceive beauty, or perhaps, vanity. Maybe it’s fortunate for those who got to be varsities and cheerleaders who are forced to be fit and stay healthy with all the rigorous training and strict diet. Unfortunately, not all of us are like them. However, we’re given many options throughout our lives, and it only takes motivation and determination.

We have to consider that during our teenage years we’re also very much exposed to stress and anxiety caused by all the engagements we have, and much more if we let ourselves to smoking, drug use and other harmful activities, which, by the way, we hope not. All these physical, intellectual, emotional, and spiritual strain can manifest as health problems that can be mild to severe cases. The usual early symptoms of stress can be frequent headaches or migraine, backaches, depression, problems in sleep, eating problems, and loss of focus and stamina.

Fortunately, as we have earlier said, we’re given lots of options and one of these is engaging in helpful and healthy activities such as yoga. Yoga has been popular in adults, but as the world incurred many changes, both experts and practitioners have delved in the encouragement of adolescent participation. This is to incorporate holistic development and wellness as early as the teenage years where lots of physiological changes occur.

The principles of yoga include lots of meditational practices that involve breathing patterns and positions or asanas. Asanas are significant constituents of it as they have specific effects on the endocrine glands, joints, muscles, ligaments, and nerves but the crucial effect is on the endocrine glands because they target the secretion of hormones to be released into the blood stream. We all know that hormones are important in the function of our organs and then of course our body. Through asanas, we can correct whatever malfunction there is by simply allowing our body to target certain endocrine gland through position and movement. It’s then when we can experience balance within our mind and body, which in turn helps us to feel good about ourselves – confident and healthy.

Now that we know the benefit of yoga to our health and being, we can perhaps think of it as another fun and exciting hobby that we and our friends can enjoy. We never know if we carry on doing the thing for the rest of our lives and stay as youthful and great we can ever be.
